What we are looking for

The Allianz Foundation funds projects and programmes across Europe that improve living conditions for future generations by responding to the interconnected ecological and social challenges and ruptures of our time, and by making as tangible a contribution as possible to the transformation towards sustainability.

Within our grants programme, the Allianz Foundation currently funds three areas: Sustainable Cities, Trustworthy Information and Socially Engaged Arts. We are particularly interested in initiatives that create connections between these areas and test new forms of collaboration.

We are also looking for ideas with translocal, interdisciplinary and participatory approaches that bring together different actors, build sustainable networks and generate a positive impact on the environment and society. It therefore matters to us that our funding activities handle natural resources, climate and the environment responsibly. As a European foundation, we also place particular value on transnational and/or cross-regional initiatives.

We are currently looking for projects and programmes with the following focus areas:

Your idea

We identify, initiate and support projects with the potential to drive and help shape the transformation towards sustainability. If you have an idea that fits our current funding priorities, you can submit your proposal through our portal as a short concept note. Before completing the form, please read our funding guidelines and the FAQs below carefully. This will allow you to check in advance whether your initiative matches our funding priorities and eligibility criteria.

Our funding process has several stages: based on your concept note, we first assess the general eligibility of your organisation and initiative. If funding is possible and the initiative fits our foundation strategy, we invite you to an informal conversation about a potential partnership. We aim to respond to you within four weeks.

FAQ

What can be funded?

We fund initiatives that contribute to a sustainable, just and open society and align with the Allianz Foundation's goals. Both project and programme funding are possible. Project funding supports time-limited, clearly defined initiatives with specific goals, activities and outcomes. Programme funding is aimed at longer-term work encompassing several interconnected activities or projects within the applicant organisation's overall portfolio.

Who can receive funding?

We fund non-profit organisations exclusively. In exceptional cases, this may be waived provided the projects serve exclusively non-profit purposes.

Can I apply for funding as an individual?

No. Within our funding programme, we can only fund legal entities or organisations. Applications from individuals cannot therefore be considered.

What is the maximum duration for funded projects or programmes?

Initiatives should run for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 36 months.

What is the maximum funding amount?

We generally fund initiatives up to €300,000. The Allianz Foundation finances up to 75% of total costs. When assessing applications, we check whether the requested funds are proportionate to the planned activities and allow for realistic implementation of the initiative. This includes ensuring fair remuneration for everyone involved in the project. We also welcome measures for climate responsibility and/or the implementation of a climate strategy within the project and the organisation.

Do I need to contribute own funds or additional third-party funding?

Yes. The Allianz Foundation generally does not provide full financing for projects. Applicants must therefore finance at least 25% of total costs through own funds or additional third-party funding. A project can only start once its overall financing is secured. Third-party funding must be firmly committed before the initiative begins. It is therefore not possible to start an initiative using only Allianz Foundation funds and raise further third-party funding during the project.

Please also note that in-kind contributions (non-monetary contributions such as voluntary work or resources provided free of charge) cannot be recognised as part of the cost and financing plan.

Can I cover administrative and infrastructure costs with Allianz Foundation funding?

Yes. We recognise that organisations incur costs that cannot be directly attributed to individual project or programme activities, such as rent, organisational infrastructure, team development or preparing future funding applications.

To give applicants the flexibility they need, up to 20% of project or programme costs can be requested as administrative costs. No receipt-based evidence is required for these costs in the financial report. However, as part of the full application, the Allianz Foundation may request an explanation of how the funds are intended to be used.

What does the application process look like?

Our application process has several stages. You can submit a concept note for your funding idea through our portal. The Allianz Foundation team will review your request and aim to respond within four weeks.

If your initiative fits the Allianz Foundation's focus and meets our funding criteria, we will invite you to a conversation about a potential partnership. During this dialogue phase, we discuss together, among other things, the initiative's contribution to the sustainability transformation, its strategic relevance, its potential for impact, its feasibility and the planned financing.

If this conversation leads to a mutually positive assessment, we will invite you to submit a full application. This includes a detailed project or programme description, a cost and financing plan, a milestone plan, and the documents required for due diligence.

We generally decide on an application within a period of at least 2 and at most 6 months. If the decision is positive, we conclude a funding agreement with you and begin our collaboration. Please note that no legal entitlement to funding exists before the funding agreement is concluded. Being invited to the dialogue phase or to submit a full application does not create any claims against the Allianz Foundation.

In which languages can I apply?

Concept notes can only be submitted in English. For organisational reasons, we are currently unable to consider other languages.

In which countries does the Allianz Foundation fund projects?

The Allianz Foundation funds initiatives with an impact focus in Europe. Delivery and use of funds must take place predominantly within the member states of the Council of Europe (plus Kosovo). Here's a full list of eligible countries here:

Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom.

Can my initiative have already started?

As a rule, we do not fund initiatives retroactively. Eligible expenses can only be incurred after a funding decision has been made. We assess on a case-by-case basis whether exceptions are possible for ongoing programmes.

Can I receive feedback on my application?

We receive a large number of concept notes. For this reason, we are unfortunately unable to offer individual advice or substantive feedback at this early stage of the selection process. If we select your initiative for the dialogue phase, we will enter into dialogue with you and provide feedback on your application as the process continues.

What is meant by initiatives handling natural resources responsibly and developing ecologically sustainable formats and strategies?

We support engagement with the climate and environmental impact of your own work and explicitly encourage related measures as part of the project or programme budget. This includes, for example, avoiding air travel, further measures for climate-friendly mobility for project staff or event participants, sustainable event formats, additional costs for regional, seasonal and vegan catering, and the reuse of materials.
