How we fund

How the Allianz Foundation funds change across Europe: five programmes support people and organisations building open, resilient, climate-just societies.

We fund across Europe through five programmes: Grants, Hubs, Fellows, Research Movers of Tomorrow and Research.

The Allianz Foundation supports people and organisations who are committed to building open, resilient and climate-just societies.

Each programme plays a different role, from long-term institution-building to individual recognition, but all work towards the same goal: enabling better living conditions for the next generations.

In addition to connecting our partners to funding and resources, we also connect them to each other, building networks of solidarity that advance the sustainability transformation.

The Allianz Foundation primarily identifies and supports partners through proactive outreach, actively seeking organisations and initiatives that align with its priorities.

Funding by programme

Grants

Within our Grants Programme, we fund three areas:

Sustainable Cities, Trustworthy Information and Socially Engaged Arts.

We are particularly interested in initiatives that create connections between these areas and test new forms of collaboration.

This can include, for example, translocal, interdisciplinary and participatory approaches that bring different actors together and build sustainable networks.

We place particular value on transnational and/or cross-regional initiatives that remain strongly rooted in their local surroundings.

Grants are selected through proactive outreach. If you have an exciting idea that fits our current funding priorities, feel free to get in touch with us through our portal.

Fellows

Our Fellows Programme supports individuals from civil society, culture, arts and academia who are developing innovative approaches to social, ecological and cultural challenges.

Fellowships typically run for ten months, during which Fellows receive both financial and advisory support to develop artistic works, prototypes, platforms, new narratives or event formats.

Beyond individual funding, Fellows join a European-wide network, creating creative synergies with other Allianz Foundation initiatives, including the Hubs. Fellows are selected through proactive outreach.

Hubs

Allianz Foundation Hubs are established local organisations that we support as long-term regional anchors.

Through proactive outreach, we identify institutions already rooted in their communities and help them grow into lasting centres for civil society, culture, or environmental and climate action.

Multi-year structural funding allows each Hub to develop public programmes and build connections with partners and grassroots movements, while cooperating across borders through jointly developed projects, staff exchanges or multilateral residencies.

Through the Hubs, a pan-European ecosystem of knowledge, innovation and pioneering spirit is emerging. It is built to grow into a transnational European civil society that stands for openness, diversity, resilience and ecological awareness.

Research

Our research programme builds an evidence base for Europe's change makers in civil society, culture and politics.

At its core is a large-scale survey conducted every two years among Generation Y and Generation Z across several European countries, exploring what kind of future society young people want, how they assess the risk of backlash against the current political order, and how they translate their ideals into civic action.

Findings inform our own funding and programming, and lay the groundwork for further participation, including European workshop series where social movement leaders, artists and other forward-thinkers develop scenarios for civic engagement, both locally and across borders.

Movers of Tomorrow

The Movers of Tomorrow Award recognises young people between 16 and 24 who are committed to equal opportunities, open societies and a living planet.

Winners are nominated by others, initiatives, peers, family or friends, and share their commitment in a short video.

The award combines a Public Vote Award, decided through public online voting, with a Jury Award for especially outstanding commitment. Public Vote winners each receive €1,500. From among these winners, the jury selects particularly outstanding entries, whose winners receive a further €3,500 on top of that, for a total of €5,000. All winners are invited to an awards ceremony and have the opportunity to join an ongoing alumni network.
