Socially Engaged Arts

I Don't Have Another Land by Nathan Coley via Autostrada Biennale

Building a future grounded in equal opportunity without being harmful to our planet requires imagination, dialogue and collective action.

This is why we look at Socially Engaged Arts: artists, cultural institutions and creative communities who bring social, political and ecological challenges into focus while imagining new possibilities for the future. In doing so, they become vital actors in the struggle for open societies and a sustainable world.

They Are All Gone, Heartefact House, Belgrade

Rooted in co-creation and participation, Socially Engaged Arts foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, change perspectives and spark positive social change. Rather than merely critiquing the complexities of society, these practices engage with them directly. By doing so, they often uncover insights, connections and solutions that other fields overlook.

Art has always been highly attuned to the pressures and transformations of its time.

It recognizes emerging shifts before they become widely visible. It can use facts and figures to appeal not only to the minds but also to the hearts of its audience and helps us connecting abstract figures to our personal lives. Yet this very power has also made culture a key battleground for populistic and anti-democratic forces around the world.

Circulations by Tamara Grčič via Autostrada Biennale

At a moment when culture is under growing pressure, funding iscutis cut, and institutions are targeted simply for what they represent, supporting artists and cultural organisations is more important than ever. Their resilience is essential to the resilience of democratic societies. Defending artistic freedom means defending openness, diversity and the possibility of a shared future.

We want future generations to be able to live in societies where everyone has equal opportunities and the chance to lead a livable life. Socially Engaged Arts make this vision tangible. They enable people not only to imagine a different future but to see it, feel it and actively participate in creating it.
